To celebrate the release of one of the most popular Air Jordan
Sneaker, The Olympics Sevens, I wanted to share with you my story on how I
became a female sneaker head.
When I was 12
years old, I was exposed to the Air Jordans shoes. It was the "it"
shoes and everyone was wearing it. So my mom got me my first pair of Jordans which
cost about $120 with tax but after we came back to the house, my dad heard how
much it cost and forced my mom to return it. I was devastated! I really wanted
the shoes and my father thought it was just a waste of money. It created a big
impact in my life. After that I never asked my parents for anything and I was
eager to find a job so I can purchase whatever I want without the hassle of bothering
my parents for money and without hearing the rejection that I knew my dad would
say. At age 13, I found a job and started buying my own things and started my
collection of shoes. I don’t think I was considered a sneaker head until I was 16,
which is when I started collecting limited edition SB Nike Dunks because my ex-fiancée
was a skater and the only skate shoes that, was out and was cool was the Nike
Dunks SB. I love collecting the SB Nike Dunk shoes because I felt like I was
the only girl who collected these types of shoes. I would get lots of attention
from other skaters and also my ex-fiancée like enjoyed it the attention I was
getting because he would get attention too. Then at age 17, when I broke up
with my ex-fiancée I started dating and I ended up dating a Jordan sneaker
collector and that was when I started building my collection of Air Jordans. We
even had matching white Air Jordan sneakers to wear for when we would get
married, unfortunately that relationship didn’t last.
I had over 200+
pairs of Air Jordans and over 350+ pairs of sneakers overall. I had Air Jordans
1's to the 23's. Multiple color ways! And I even had 2 pairs of shoes for the
ones I adored the most. I especially loved collecting limited editions. The
picture attached next to the Olympics is my personal collection.
One thing I admired about Air Jordan was the history and the controversy
of the shoe. Basically Michael Jordan was never allowed to wear the Air Jordans
on the basketball court because it was never allowed in the NBA. The typical
color for shoe must be completely white and if a player did not abide by the
rules he would have to pay $5,000 fee per each game. Michael Jordan didn’t care
he said f*ck it and still wore the shoe to his game. This built tons of
controversy. For one, the NBA couldn’t bench Michael Jordan because he was the
top player of the league but he was breaking the rules. Without the controversy
with the shoe I highly doubt that Air Jordan wouldn’t be so popular today.
Today, the Olympic
7's were released. The Olympic color way is always release around the time the
summer Olympics. It's a time to remember when Michael Jordan and The Dream
Team.
One thing, I
definitely don't miss is lining up overnight to wait for the shoe releases.
However, I’m not sure if Air Jordans are still in style now. With
this generation, I’m not even too sure if the younger kids of this generation know
who Michael Jordan is. But the term sneaker head still exists.
I listed a couple links below on where one sneaker heads gather to
buy, sell, and/or trade their shoes. So if you have any shoe that you would
like to get rid of don’t eBay it, check out the forums, I’m pretty sure you’ll
get more bang for your buck.
